What if I don't have space or a yard for a garden..
Don't fret! Container prairies are becoming a new concept with native plants. While we are still working out the best combinations, here are a few ideas.

Plants that work for us
We have had success in creating a small container prairies with heath aster, plains coreopsis, Mexican red hat, black eyed Susan, and yarrow. Our friends at Midwest Native Nursery recommend experimenting with prairie containers using the above mentioned, but also butterfly milkweed, hoary vervain, purple prairie clover, rose verbena, and little bluestem. We will have updated photos of our prairie containers next summer 2026.
Keep in Mind:
- Most native flowers do not "officially" flower until the second or third year depending on species (and at what stage you purchase them)
- While the depth of planter is important, flowering is the most important aspect. Make sure your plant has some space and don't choose overly large plants.
- Allow for drainage in your planters by adding stones/rocks to the bottom as well as some sand.
